Following is from same memo by PVV fromhis visit with Mrs. William Poland of Zanesville, gg granddaughter ofJames B. Smith. She had a newspaper obituary: Joseph T. Smith was born onNorth Fourth Street in this city (Zanesville) on May 11, 1829 and died athis home on the East Pike Friday May 11, 1900 on the 71st anniversary ofhis birth. His grandfather Major Joseph was an officer in the War of1812, was one of the early settlers of this County. His great MaternalGrandfather was Andrew Zane, brother of Ebenezer Zane, founder ofZanesville. Mr. Smith was the oldest of seven children; Alexander C. ofthe Seventh Ward; John P. of the Fourth Ward; Dr. J. F. of the EastPike"... at which point PVV said Mrs. Poland gave him the obituary, whichhe put in his Joseph Smith file. She also had an obituary written in penwhich she said had been presented at Joseph Taylor Smith's funeral:"Joseph Taylor Smith was born May 11, 1829 and died May 11, 1900. Hemoved from the city when he was 12 years old (1842) and came to the farmon which he lived until his death. His Grandfather Joseph Smith was aMajor in the War of 1812. His ancestors on his mother'sside were thefounders of Zanesville. His Great Grandfather Andrew Zane being thebrother of Ebenezer Zane. He was the oldest of seven children, AlexanderC. and John L. of Zanesville; James F. of the East Pike; Mrs. Minerva l.Rogers of Toronto, OH; Mrs. John A. Wright of Summerfield Ohio; and Mrs.Jennie E. Grey, deceased. He was married December 5, 1864 to CarolineSmith. Four children were born to them, three of whom died when young,his oldest child Mrs. Isaac C. Woolf surviving.

Mrs. Poland said that Joseph was a sargeant in the Union Army during theCivil War. He was in the 149th Regiment of the Ohio National Guard,12-15-1864 Roll number 19691.
