Belgrave was the 4th son of Paul Ninnis. He joined the Royal Navy in1861, and rose to become Inspector Surgeon General. He was naturalistto the Norther n Territory of the Southern Australian SurveyingExpedition of 1864-6. He was also a member of Captain Sir George NaresArctic Expedition 1875-6. He was awarded the Sir Gilbert Blane GoldMedal. He was a CVO (1912), MD, MRCS, LLM, FSA . He was a Knight ofJustice, and held the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
His published work included: Remarks on the Ethnology, Natural History,and Meteorology of the Northern Territory of South Australia. On anepidemic amongst Esquimaux dogs.
He lived at The Elms, Leigham Avenue, Streatham SW16. He was a member ofthe Army and Navy Club.
He is buried at West Norwood Cemetery in grave ref. 21400, in plot 102.He was aged 85
