From Margaret Knezek: Uncle Cloyd was born in Hocking County, Ohio, probably in the town ofHaydenville. After grade school he worked in the clay mines (NATCO).Records show he was a machinist in 1917 living at 361 Cortland, HighlandPark, MI. In 1920 he was living on Savannah, in Detroit. In 1922 he wentto Florida and worked as a carpenter. He returned a short time later andwas living in Troy Township, MI. In the early 30's they moved to SalemTownship, MI., and then to Whitmore Lake, MI. I heard he was a good ballplayer in his youth. Maybe that's where Deanacquired his talent. Most of the Hardesty's were top horse-shoe pitchers, and Charnelle (Jim) was the pie eating champ. The only time I saw UncleCloyd angry was when he came home from work late (he worked afternoons)and Aunt Eletha only saved him a half pie instead of a whole one. MaybeJim snitched some of the pie. Uncle Cloyd died at the age of eighty-four from the complications ofdiabetes. |
