As this indian party werereturning with their remaining prisoner, Young Tilton, a few miles upIndian Cross Creek, they came across David Cox; Thomas Swearingen, JohnFitzpatrick and one Crowley, a school teacher on Buffalo C reek, who wereout gathering Ginseng (spring and fall are the best time for gatheringit). Young Swearingen was shot; and Cox who had repeatedly declared hewould never be taken, fought the Indians with his hoe, until he waspretty badly speared up and killed; and the weeds were found beatenaround for some distance around. Fitzpatrick and Crowley escaped, bothunmarried men. Cox left a family, he was a cousin of captain George Fox.Tilton was not long a prisoner - was redeemed.
